Volunteering - 3rd Age Project

Volunteer Now is a link between those who need help and those who want to help.

It is well recognised that social interaction is vital to our health and wellbeing. It is important for people to feel part of the community, this can become a problem as people get older.

Volunteering keeps people active as well as creating friendships and social networks.
'Regardless of ability or disability, anyone can volunteer, it's just finding the right niche' (President Mary McAleese, Senior Helpline Launch 2001)

The aim of the 3rd Age Project is to provide opportunities and services for people who are over the age of 50.

We recognise the wide range of skills and experience people in this age group have to offer. Volunteers may wish to become involved in group work, alternatively they may become involved in working one to one.

Opportunities
Opportunities exist to work in the voluntary, statutory, charitable and community sectors: for example working with older people; people with disabilities; children; hospital; homeless; befriending; advice and information; fundraising; administration; community; telephone support; sports; arts.

The Befriending Service
This aims to provide a supportive friendship to older people. It could mean a short visit for a chat or accompanying someone on an outing. The service is flexible according to need.

Good Morning Newry & Mourne
This service provides a free daily telephone call to help reduce feelings of vulnerability and loneliness often felt by older people. Volunteers will make calls on a rota basis which means a small time commitment.

Support to Senior Citizens Groups
This support is an important part of our work and volunteers play a vital role in providing a quality service to older people in a group setting

Training
Training is offered to volunteers to support them in their work and to enhance their own skills and personal development.

Senior Volunteering Initiatives
As we continue to strive to meet the needs of those 50+ we aim to develop new initiatives which will build on the experience, skills and talents of senior volunteers. An example of this is the 'Connections' project, supported by NIPPA and Newry & Mourne Health and Social Services Trust. This is a transgenerational project involving senior citizens, parents and toddler groups.
